In large part we believe that this is because fan experience was designed in from the very start. Tottenham Football Stadium opened in April 2019 and has already become known as one of the best stadiums in the world. I also draw on several of my global colleagues who spoke at Soccerex, including Populous Managing Director EMEA Christopher Lee based in our London office, Jonathan Mallie, a Senior Principal who leads our New York Office, and Senior Principal and Asia Pacific regional board member Andrew James, to gain their on-the-ground perspective of the global nature of trends in stadium design. However, I want to use this article to outline some of the biggest current trends in international stadium design, and to suggest that the work that we are now doing with venue operators, clubs, leagues and international federations to prepare, secure, and reopen stadiums is a continuation of critical developments in stadium design over the past 40 years.Īll of Populous’ combined learnings and expertise will be vital as we look to provide safe and secure venues that continue to create memorable experiences, as well as finding new ways for clubs and stadiums to generate revenue – and find new sources of revenue – to help secure their businesses and the thousands of jobs and livelihoods that are directly connected to them. In the midst of a pandemic that has changed the way that many of us go about our lives, as well as potentially changing the business of sport forever, it might be considered natural to throw out our understandings of ways in which stadiums operate and to start again.
